Description
American criminal law profoundly affects the lives of the individuals and institutions involved in cases, whether as victims, witnesses, or defendants. Mark Filip has spent most of his legal career in various roles within the criminal justice system—as a federal judge, as Deputy Attorney General of the U.S. Department of Justice, as a federal prosecutor, and as a defense attorney, both paid and pro bono. In this talk, he will discuss the current state of American federal criminal law, and he will suggest some possible areas for reform—including sentencing policy, the prudence of trying to measure success by some of the current metrics in the criminal justice arena, and the recent imposition of corporate monitors and corporate integrity agreements.
