On the Issues: Dr. Darienne Driver

MPS Superintendent since 2014, Dr. Driver has earned positive reviews from community and business leaders for her efforts to improve the state’s largest school district. But with a four-year graduation rate of 58 percent and state exams showing that only about 20 percent of district students read proficiently, Driver acknowledges that much more needs to be done. Late last year, she unveiled plans for a series of major reforms. They include an earlier start to the school year, school uniforms in most schools, and more principal coaching and potential staff changes in MPS’s lowest performing schools. They also call for MPS to be the sole chartering authority in the city. During her visit to Eckstein Hall, we’ll talk with Supt. Driver about the district’s successes and struggles, and about her latest plans for reform.
