On The Issues: The Future of College Sports

Mike will be talking about the potential for seismic shifts in college athletics with two sports law experts: Professor Matt Mitten, Executive Director of the National Sports Law Institute at Marquette University Law School, and Professor Steve Ross, Lewis H. Vovakis Distinguished Faculty Scholar at Penn State University and Executive Director of the Penn State Center for the Study of Sports in Society. Professors Mitten and Ross will discuss Alston v. NCAA, an antitrust case awaiting decision from the U.S. Supreme Court, which centers on the NCAA’s ability to limit athletic scholarships to “non-cash education-related benefits.” They will also address proposed state and federal legislation that would give athletes new opportunities to make money by selling their “name, image, and likeness” rights while still in college.
